On Sunday, November 1, top comedians and entertainers will gather at Oriental Hotel, Lekki Road, Victoria Island, Lagos for the maiden edition of Empowering Laughter Day and Award Night. This event is organised by Project ASHA, a youth-oriented, non-governmental organisation to raise awareness and funds for women and girls empowerment work in Nigeria. The award ceremony will also serve as a means of recognition of notable citizens who champion women, girls and children empowerment.
The night of entertainment will be headlined by Alibaba GCFR and jointly anchored by Princess and MC Bambino. Other artists that are expected at the show include Timi Dakolo, Buchi, Ozzy Bosco, Okey Bakassi, Koffi, Toby Grey, Ronnie, TJ Hays, Mr Johnbull, Gordons and MC Abey.
The awards presentation will be preceeded by a series of discourse with Chief Mrs Caroline Danjuma, Ogee Robinson, Vweta Chadwick and Segun Manuel as speakers.
This initiative, supported by OzzyBosco Smile Foundation, is a fund raising strategy for the NGO. PROJECT ASHA has been committed to advocating for and securing the basic human rights and civil liberties of the vulnerable in the society through good governance, democratic values and principles.
The co-ordinator, Project ASHA, Mr Steven Robinson, observed that the organisation had recently donated three wheelchairs to three women who were abandoned by their husbands because of their condition which had been caused by accident and ill health.
“We started in 2008 under a different name. To empower young girls, their mothers must also be empowered. We support girls who are out of school. 16 girls are currently being sponsored by our philanthropists. Not everyone can go to school so we set up an academy that runs vocational programme and we have the US Consulate on board on that.
The Assistant Co-ordinator, Ms. Tricia Obi, expressed her optimism that the event will help to raise the needed funds for the numerous projects that the group aims to execute for the well-being of the vulnerable.
